We primarily perform PET/MR examinations in the case of cancer and neurological diseases.
The PET/MR includes two types of examinations.
One hour before the test, a radioactive substance called an isotope is administered intravenously. After waiting an hour, the isotope accumulates in certain types of tissue. Following this, the patient is positioned in the PET/MR device, which is similar to an MRI machine. 'Coils' are placed on the area of interest to measure the MRI signal.
During the examination, PET data collection occurs in parallel with MRI measurements.
By fusing (combining) the images from both types of examinations, it is possible to accurately determine the abnormal isotope accumulation, its location within an organ, the size of the lesion, and whether it is benign or malignant.
PET/MR examinations typically last around 30 minutes, during which the patient must remain motionless in the device.
Due to the MRI measurements, the examination is very loud and noisy. If necessary, intravenous MRI contrast agents are used to further enhance the understanding of the lesion (venous contrast agents can only be administered with proper kidney function).
It is essential to maintain the appropriate blood sugar level for the PET/MR examination. Therefore, you should not eat or consume sugary liquids 4-6 hours before the examination. Not adhering to this can lead to inaccurate results.
Take your regular medications as usual.
After the examination, it is not recommended to stay near small children and pregnant women due to increased sensitivity to radiation on that day.
The contraindications for PET/MR are the same as those for traditional MRI examinations. We cannot perform the examination in the presence of certain metallic implants, as the high magnetic field is not safe for certain metallic implants."
The examination results will be sent to the patient's home address and can also be found on the EESZT platform.
The examination fee can only be paid by bank transfer or bank card payment.
